39 The management profile section of the survey collects data on gender and ethnicity for the top three levels of management. The profile excludes professional/specialist positions that do not have a primary management function. As at 30 June 1999 there were 1,288 positions in the Public Service in the top three levels of management. Women filled 32% of these senior management positions and 19% (7) of chief executives positions. The seven departments with woman chief executives, taken as a group, had double the proportion of women in second and third level management positions (47%) than the group of all other departments (23%).
40 Maori made up 7% of this senior management group, while Pacific Islands people comprised 2%. While women and Maori were represented in this group at around half the level of their representation in the Public Service as a whole, for Pacific Islands people this figure was around a third. Ethnicity was not recorded for 184 positions (14%).
