Managing for outcomes / results - including performance measurement

Managing for outcomes and results is about State agencies working to maximise results for New Zealanders. This includes:

  • Identifying the most important results for New Zealanders

  • Managing for these results, including setting clear desired results, implementing plans based upon these results and learning about ‘what works’ in the process

  • Seizing opportunities to work together whenever this helps achieve the results.

  • Managing for outcomes is about looking at the world from the perspective of citizens and asking how government can work together better to achieve better outcomes. Ongoing work around managing for outcomes and results will include:

  • Engaging with departments and Crown entities to achieve the basics of Managing for Results (and Outcomes), including the identification of each agency’s “vital few” outcomes

  • Working with chief executives to help them work as a leadership team and to explore opportunities for sector leadership and enhanced sector-based coordination

  • Promoting and supporting agencies to contribute to shared outcomes when this adds value for New Zealanders

  • Ensuring that the governance design of the State sector supports and promotes coordination whenever appropriate.
